Photography has long fascinated me, all through long hours in the darkroom. Working in the computer is a different and even more exploratory experience for me than processing in the darkroom. The combination of photography and digital painting creates a tension between control and spontaneity is very exciting.

There are so many variables! Every tool, every brush has governing characteristics to be adjusted. Often, many layers are constructed and worked separately. An image can tease me and wear me out. Sometimes, I just throw it out. Art is like life. It requires time and thought and intense cooperation with the inner life of the work itself.

I create my images on film or transparencies, fine-tuning them and sometimes painting them digitally. I search for the reality that lies beneath the surface of the image. Sometimes, the finished print is very close to my original photograph; at other times, I simplify and somewhat abstract the camera's view. I go where the image leads.
